How to Replace Your LifeStraw Filter or Membrane

LifeStraw's household and pitcher-style filters use a hollow-fiber membrane that physically strains out bacteria, parasites, and microplastics — no chemicals involved. That membrane is also the part that eventually clogs and needs replacing.

How often to replace it

LifeStraw membrane filters are typically rated for a set number of gallons or liters (check the packaging for your specific model, since capacity varies by product line) rather than a fixed number of months. The clearest sign it's due is a noticeably slower flow rate even after backwashing.

What you'll need

Your replacement membrane filter cartridge.

Steps

1. Remove the reservoir or lid assembly from your LifeStraw pitcher or dispenser.
2. Unscrew or pull out the old membrane filter cartridge from its housing.
3. Before installing the new filter, follow LifeStraw's backwash/priming instructions if included — some models need a quick reverse-flush before first use to clear manufacturing residue.
4. Insert the new membrane filter into the housing and make sure it's seated fully, with no gaps at the seal.
5. Run the first batch of filtered water through and discard it rather than drinking it, to clear any initial residue.
6. Check the flow rate — a properly seated new filter should flow noticeably faster than the old one did right before replacement.
