Air Filters for Home: Furnace, HVAC, Air Purifiers, and Refrigerators
Clean air at home starts with the right filter, and Fine Filters makes it simple to find yours. We stock air filters that fit gas furnaces, central HVAC systems, room air conditioners, standalone air purifiers, and refrigerators. Match your filter three ways: by the size printed on the frame, by the MERV rating your system needs, or by the exact model number on your old filter. Once you find it, you can set a reorder schedule and we deliver the next one before you run out. Every order ships free across the United States. If you want a second set of eyes before you buy, call us at (732) 908-7681 or email support@finefiltersstore.com and we confirm the fit for you.
Shop Air Filters by Type
Furnace and HVAC Filters
Pleated furnace filters catch dust, pollen, and pet dander while your system pushes air through the house. We carry sizes from 1 inch pleated filters like 16x20x1 and 20x20x1 up to thick whole-house media such as 20x25x4 and 25x20x6. You can pick your efficiency level too, with MERV 8, MERV 11, and MERV 13 options from Filtrete, Honeywell, AprilAire, Aerostar, and Lennox. A higher MERV traps more particles, so choose the highest rating your system handles without straining airflow. Our furnace filters fit and replace the common sizes used by Carrier, Trane, Rheem, Goodman, Honeywell, Lennox, and Filtrete systems, so you can switch brands as long as the size and MERV match.
Shop furnace filters by size. Order by the size printed on your filter frame. Our most requested sizes include 16x20x1, 20x20x1, 20x25x1, 20x25x4, and 25x20x6. Use the size filter at the top of this page to see every match in stock.
Air Purifier Replacement Filters
Standalone air purifiers rely on True HEPA and activated carbon filters to pull fine particles and odors out of a single room. We stock replacements for the most popular units in American homes, including Coway AP-1512HH, LEVOIT Core 300, Winix 115115, GermGuardian FLT4825, and the Dyson HP and TP series. Many of these combine a prefilter, a HEPA layer, and a carbon layer in one cartridge, so a single replacement covers dust, allergens, and household smells.
Air Conditioner Filters
Room and through-the-wall air conditioners need their own filters to protect the coil and keep airflow strong. A clean AC filter also helps the unit cool faster and run more efficiently through the summer. We stock genuine OEM options such as the GE WJ85X10041 for GE room air conditioners.
Refrigerator Air Filters
Many refrigerators use a small air filter that most owners forget about. This carbon cartridge absorbs food odors so smells stay out of your milk, produce, and leftovers. We carry Sub-Zero air purification cartridges in the 7007067 and 7042798 versions, plus the LG LT120F fresh air filter. If your Sub-Zero needs both filters at once, our water and air combo packs replace the air cartridge and the water filter in one order. For water filtration on its own, browse our full Water Filters collection.
Air Purifiers and Ionizers
Beyond replacement filters, we also stock complete air cleaning units. Shop the Coway AP-1512HH Mighty and the LEVOIT Core 300-P, both built around True HEPA filtration, along with plug-in air ionizers for smaller spaces.
More Air Filters
Every air filter we stock lives on this page. Sort by best selling or by price, or type your model number into the search bar to jump straight to your exact filter. You can also round out your home filtration with our Humidifier Filters collection.
How to Choose the Right Air Filter
Start with the size. For furnace and HVAC filters, read the size printed on the frame of your current filter. It lists length, width, and thickness in that order, such as 20x25x4. Order that same size unless you plan to upgrade to a thicker media cabinet. If the print has worn off, measure the filter slot and round to the nearest standard size.
Then choose your MERV rating. MERV stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, and it tells you how much a filter captures. Most homes do best between MERV 8 and MERV 13. MERV 8 handles everyday dust and pollen, MERV 11 adds pet dander and finer particles, and MERV 13 catches smoke and some bacteria. Ratings above MERV 13 belong in hospitals and clean rooms, and they can choke airflow in a home system.
Know your rating system: MERV, MPR, and FPR. You will see three rating scales while you shop, and they all measure filter strength in a slightly different way. MERV is the industry standard set by ASHRAE and runs from 1 to 20. MPR is the scale 3M prints on Filtrete filters, and it runs from 300 to 2800. FPR is the scale The Home Depot uses on Honeywell and store brand filters, and it runs from 4 to 10. The three scales line up closely, so you can shop across brands once you know the match. Match the MERV number and you match the performance, whatever the box calls it.
| MERV | MPR (3M Filtrete) | FPR (Home Depot) | Captures |
|---|---|---|---|
| MERV 8 | MPR 600 to 800 | FPR 5 | Dust, pollen, lint |
| MERV 11 | MPR 1500 | FPR 7 | Pet dander, fine dust |
| MERV 13 | MPR 1900 | FPR 10 | Smoke, some bacteria |
For purifiers, match the model. Air purifier filters fit specific units, so find the name or number on your purifier and order the matching HEPA and carbon set. A quality compatible filter that matches the original size and media works the same as the brand version and costs you less.
Find the Right Air Filter for Your Home
For allergies and pets: Choose MERV 11 or MERV 13. These ratings trap pet dander, pollen, and dust mite debris that trigger symptoms. In a purifier, pick a True HEPA filter for the finest allergens.
For smoke and wildfire season: Run MERV 13 in your HVAC system or a True HEPA purifier in the rooms you use most. Change your filters more often while smoke is in the air.
For odors, cooking, and VOCs: Look for an activated carbon filter. Carbon absorbs smells and gases that pleated media passes straight through. We carry carbon options for both furnaces and purifiers, plus the Lennox Y6604 carbon filter.
For a single room: A standalone air purifier with a HEPA and carbon set clears one room fast without touching your HVAC system.
How Often to Replace Your Air Filter
Replacement timing depends on the air filter type and your home. Use this schedule as your starting point:
- 1 inch furnace filter: replace every 1 to 3 months
- 4 inch media filter: replace every 6 to 12 months
- HEPA purifier filter: replace every 6 to 12 months
- Carbon filter: replace every 3 to 6 months
- Refrigerator air cartridge: replace about every 6 months
Homes with pets, smokers, or wildfire smoke go through filters faster. Change yours sooner if the filter looks gray or you notice weaker airflow. For a deeper look at timing and air quality tips, read the Fine Filters blog.
Frequently Asked Questions
What MERV rating do I need for my home?
Most homes do best with MERV 8 to MERV 13. MERV 8 covers standard dust and pollen, MERV 11 suits homes with pets or mild allergies, and MERV 13 captures smoke and finer particles. Check your system manual before you go higher, because a filter that is too restrictive can strain the blower and freeze the AC coil.
What is the difference between MERV, MPR, and FPR?
MERV is the industry standard scale from ASHRAE and runs 1 to 20. MPR is 3M's scale on Filtrete filters and runs 300 to 2800. FPR is The Home Depot's scale on Honeywell and store brand filters and runs 4 to 10. They line up closely, so MERV 11 sits near MPR 1500 and FPR 7. Match the MERV number and you match the performance.
What is the difference between MERV and HEPA?
MERV rates filters that run inside furnaces and HVAC systems. HEPA is a separate standard that captures 99.97 percent of particles down to 0.3 microns, which lines up with roughly MERV 17 or higher. True HEPA blocks too much airflow for most home HVAC systems, so it lives in standalone air purifiers instead of furnaces.
Can I put a HEPA filter in my furnace?
Usually no. True HEPA is too dense for a standard furnace and restricts airflow enough to damage the system. For HEPA level cleaning, run a standalone air purifier or a whole house HEPA bypass unit.
What size air filter do I need?
Read the size on the side of your current filter, which lists length, width, and thickness, for example 16x20x1, and order the same one. If you cannot read it, measure the filter slot and round to the nearest standard size.
Do refrigerators really have air filters?
Many do. A refrigerator air filter is a small carbon cartridge that absorbs odors so smells do not move between the fridge and freezer. Replace it about every 6 months to keep food fresh.
Are compatible filters as good as the original?
A quality compatible filter matches the original size, media type, and filtration grade, so it performs the same for less money. We list the exact models each filter fits, so you order with confidence.
