Step 1: Start with your water source. City water usually carries a chlorine taste that a carbon filter handles well. If your city uses chloramine instead, confirm a chloramine claim on the filter, because a standard chlorine filter does not automatically treat it. Well water is different. Test it first, then match the result: metals or nitrate point to reverse osmosis, and bacteria call for UV treatment after sediment pretreatment.

Step 2: Pick the filter type for the job. Sediment cartridges remove physical particles you can see or feel. Carbon cartridges remove chemicals that affect taste and smell. Reverse osmosis removes dissolved contaminants that the other two pass through. Choose based on which problem you actually have, then confirm the rating in Step 4.

Step 3: Match the micron rating. Micron rating tells you the size of particle a filter stops, and a 5 micron sediment cartridge is the common choice for household grit. Ratings also come as absolute or nominal, and an absolute rating removes more because it states the exact pore size rather than an approximate one. How to Install and Troubleshoot Your Filter

After you install any carbon or refrigerator cartridge, flush it first. Run water through it for 3 to 5 minutes to clear the loose carbon dust from the media. Two things are normal right after a swap and clear on their own. Black specks are carbon fines and disappear once the flush runs clear. Cloudy water is trapped air and clears after you run a few gallons; if it lingers, the cartridge is not seated or is not rated for your unit.

For a whole house filter, confirm four things before you order: the housing height, the housing diameter, the inlet and outlet port size, and the micron rating you chose in Step 3. A cartridge that matches on all four drops straight into your housing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a water filter remove PFAS?

Only if it is certified for that specific claim. A general NSF 53 mark does not automatically include PFAS, because a filter can be certified for lead and cysts and make no PFAS claim at all. Look for a stated PFOA and PFOS reduction claim. This matters more now that the April 2024 EPA rule set PFAS limits at 4 parts per trillion.

Are compatible filters safe, and do they void my refrigerator warranty?

What is TDS, and does a lower number mean cleaner water?

TDS stands for total dissolved solids and measures everything dissolved in your water, including harmless minerals. A lower TDS after reverse osmosis confirms the membrane is working, but TDS alone does not identify specific contaminants, so pair it with a certification for the reduction you need.

Will a whole house filter lower my water pressure?

A correctly sized filter causes only a small pressure drop you will not notice. Pressure loss usually means the cartridge is overdue for a change or the housing is too small for your home's flow rate, so size the unit to your service line.

Does my refrigerator filter remove lead, or do I need reverse osmosis?

It depends on the certification. A fridge filter reduces lead only if it carries an NSF 53 lead claim. For the most thorough lead and dissolved metal reduction, a reverse osmosis system at the sink does more than a dispenser cartridge.

Can I recycle an old water filter cartridge?

Some manufacturers run take-back or recycling programs for spent cartridges, while others go in household waste. Check the brand's program first, and drain the cartridge before you dispose of it.
