How to Replace a Kenmore Refrigerator Water Filter (9083 & More)

A Kenmore refrigerator filter is designed to be replaced without any tools, and most models make it obvious when it's time — either a status light on the dispenser panel or a noticeably slower flow of water and ice.

How often to replace it

Kenmore recommends changing the filter every 6 months under normal use. If you notice reduced water pressure or an off taste before then, don't wait for the light — replace it early.

What you'll need

Your replacement filter cartridge (Kenmore 9083, 46-9083, 9020, or 9030) — these numbers refer to the same general filter family used across many Kenmore side-by-side and French-door models, so double-check your existing cartridge's printed model number before ordering if you're unsure.

Steps

1. Open the fresh food door and locate the filter housing, typically in the upper-right corner or behind a small access panel at the base of the fridge.
2. Turn the old filter a quarter-turn counterclockwise and pull it straight out of the housing.
3. Remove any protective packaging from the new filter and confirm the O-ring seal is in place and undamaged.
4. Push the new filter into the housing and turn clockwise until you feel it click or lock.
5. Flush the new filter by running 2–3 gallons of water through the dispenser before use — this clears out carbon dust that's normal in a brand-new filter.
6. Reset the filter reminder light per your model's instructions (usually a button press-and-hold on the dispenser panel).
