How to Clean & Replace Shark Vacuum Filters (Navigator, Rotator & Rocket)

Most Shark vacuums (Navigator NV350/NV500, Rotator NV650/750/752, and Rocket HV300/HV320 models) use a two-part filtration system: a washable foam and felt filter, plus — on many models — a separate HEPA filter that needs periodic replacement rather than washing. Mixing up which is which is the most common mistake, since washing a HEPA filter can ruin it.

How often to service it

Wash the foam/felt filters every 1–3 months, or whenever suction feels noticeably weaker. Replace the HEPA filter (if your model has one) every 6–12 months — it isn't washable, only replaceable.

What you'll need

Your replacement filter kit and, if your model has one, a separate HEPA filter.

Steps

1. Empty the dust cup and remove it from the vacuum body.
2. Locate the foam and felt filters, usually housed at the base or side of the dust cup — they typically twist or pull out by hand, no tools needed.
3. Rinse the foam and felt filters under cold running water only — no soap or detergent, which can clog the material.
4. Squeeze out excess water and lay both filters flat to air-dry for a full 24 hours before reinstalling. Reinserting a damp filter is the top cause of musty odors and reduced suction.
5. If your model has a separate HEPA filter, locate it (often behind a rear panel or inside the main body) and swap it for a new one — do not rinse it, since HEPA media breaks down when wet.
6. Reassemble the dust cup and filters, making sure everything clicks fully into place before use — a loosely seated filter will let dust bypass it entirely.
